PJ and Athletes in Tandem

About This Video

In this enrichment video, viewers meet PJ, a longtime athlete with Athletes in Tandem, a Fort Collins-based organization that pairs athletes with disabilities and able-bodied athletes so they can experience endurance events together.

PJ has Angelman syndrome and has participated in many races with Athletes in Tandem. His family, teammates, and supporters share how much he enjoys being outside, being part of the race community, and participating in events that many people may not have thought were possible for him.

The video also follows PJ’s connection to the Angelman Syndrome Foundation and his goal of reaching a major milestone: participating in his 200th event at the Chicago Marathon while helping raise awareness and support for Angelman syndrome.

This is not an exercise class or a follow-along fitness video. It is an inspiring real-life story about inclusion, endurance, adaptive athletics, community, and what becomes possible when people are supported to participate.

Good For

  • Adults with IDD who enjoy real-life stories, sports, racing, teamwork, community events, or peer representation.

  • Caregivers looking for an enrichment video about adaptive athletics, inclusion, endurance, and meaningful participation.

  • Adult day programs, home routines, or group discussions about recreation, disability awareness, community support, and trying big things with the right help.

  • Viewers who benefit from seeing people with disabilities included in exciting, challenging, and joyful community experiences.

How to Use This Video

Use this video as an inspiring enrichment option for viewers who enjoy sports, outdoor events, personal stories, or community participation.

Because the video tells PJ’s story rather than teaching an exercise routine, caregivers can frame it as a chance to watch, listen, and talk about inclusion, teamwork, and access. It may also be useful before a community event, walk, race, fundraiser, adaptive sports activity, or conversation about trying something new with support.

After watching, caregivers can ask questions like:

  • What did you learn about PJ?

  • What does Athletes in Tandem help people do?

  • How did PJ’s teammates and community support him?

  • Why do you think being part of races makes PJ happy?

  • What is something big or exciting you would like to try with support?
